Electrology is permanent hair removal by means of inserting a sterile needle/probe into the follicle and applying electricity to destroy the follicle. There are three basic methods or modalities by which this is accomplished.
Electrolysis/Galvanic - Direct current (DC) is used to cause a chemical reaction that forms caustic lye which destroys the cells in the follicle that can form a hair.
Thermolysis - Alternating current (AC) is used to create heat which dries up the follicle and destroys the blood supply to the follicle.
Blend - Both Galvanic and Thermolysis are activated simultaneously or sequentially to accomplish destruction of the follicle.
Electrology is a process. The number of treatments necessary varies for each person. Hair growth cycles, the quantity and structure of the hair, previous treatment to remove hair, heredity, hormone function, normal physiologic changes, certain medications and stress influence the treatment program. A health history is obtained at the consultation appointment to help guide the treatment. It is very important to adhere to the recommended treatment schedule to achieve optimum results.
Hair grows in a cycle with a growth phase, resting phase and shedding phase after which the cycle is repeated. Some hair may go into a dormancy period after the cycle is complete. The optimal time to treat the hair is when it is in the growth phase. It is difficult to predict the growth cycle therefore regular appointments are necessary to eliminate the hair as quickly and efficiently as possible.
There is some discomfort involved with this treatment. This also varies from person to person and area to area. Stress, menstrual cycles and area also contribute to the discomfort level. We have a topical anesthetic available.
The area(s) treated may be red and slightly swollen following the treatment. It usually lasts for fifteen minutes to an hour. However, some skin may be more sensitive and will take longer to recover. Occasionally, it may be necessary to apply ice and/or hydrocortisone cream to the area. Makeup may be reapplied when redness has diminished. Post treatment care includes, applying an astringent such as isopropyl alcohol, peroxide, witch hazel twice daily for one to two days. Avoid tanning immediately following treatment. Also avoid picking or touching the area. If the procedure is done properly there will be no permanent damage to the skin.
